Given his status as both a sculptor and a musician, Rolf Julius (1939-2011) tirelessly sought to update the relationship between those two artforms, and create “music for the eyes”— which is also the title of one of his artworks.
Air can only be heard by people walking past the Manny Building. Hidden under the building’s metal skin, speakers produce the discrete sounds of clinking metal and distant bird song. With Air, Rolf Julius has made an “audible façade”.
