Nicolas Darrot has always been interested in the worlds of theatre and opera, and many of his works can be said to borrow from their vocabularies. For his contribution to the opera house, he has decided to fly a large, mechanized black flag in reference to BLKNTRNTL, the codename for Black International, the first anarchist group established in late 19th century London. Floating in space, like a brandished icon, this banner feels threatening or vindictive – and can also be said to represent a phantom conductor’s stick, where the sound of fabric beats out the tempo.
