This work presents the now-famous episode that took place the night before D-Day, when American paratrooper John Steele got his parachute caught on a church spire in the Norman town of Sainte-Mère-église. This is one of those rare events where – without ever compromising the soldier’s commitment – it is possible to find a humorous silver lining in an unlucky moment. For this piece, a walrus (“morse” in French) adds a new narrative element, and asks new questions about the origin and outcome of this story. To be continued…
