MASTERPIECES FROM THE HOKUSAIKAN MUSEUM IN OBUSE
June 28th — September 7th 2025

Over 150 works, including 40 paintings. The majority of the works on loan are leaving Japan for the first time.

The Musée d’Histoire de Nantes regularly organizes international exhibitions showcasing major ancient and contemporary civilizations. In 2017, Osaka Castle and the Château des ducs de Bretagne signed a pact formalizing their strategic and scientific collaborations. As part of these cultural and academic exchanges, numerous contemporary Japanese artists have already been invited to the Château des ducs de Bretagne. 10 years after the major 2014 exhibition Samouraï, 1 000 ans d’histoire du Japon (“Samurai, 1,000 Years of Japanese History”), which painted a portrait of Japan from past to present, our close ties with the country continue in 2025, with a one-of-a-kind presentation of works by Hokusai.

Organized in collaboration with the Hokusai Museum in Obuse, Japan, this exhibition will highlight several themes dear to Hokusai’s heart, like his relationship to nature, plants, water, as well as the traditional Edo-era theme of beautiful women, through the scope of his woodblock prints (Ukiyo-e) and paintings.
